Rev Fr Stephen Durkin, Parish Priest of Maida Vale, peacefully passed away at St John of God Bendat Family Comprehensive Cancer Centre at around 3pm on Tuesday 13 July 2010.
Fr Durkin, son of Grahame and Moira Durkin, was born on the 28 July 1956 in Wagga Wagga, NSW.
He was educated at CBC Bedford and studied at St Paul's National Seminary in Sydney for the Archdiocese of Perth.
Fr Steve was ordained a priest on 15 February 1992. His first appointment was as an assistant priest at St Mary's Cathedral in 1992 and he was then transferred to Mirrabooka on 16 December 1992. On 17 April 1994 he was made assistant priest in Kalgoorlie and a year later on the 28 April 1995 became the Parish Priest of Kalgoorlie and Dean of the Kalgoorlie Zone, a position he held until he was transferred to his last Parish, St Francis of Assisi, Maida Vale, on the 16 June 2000.
Archbishop Hickey, Bishop Sproxton and the clergy of the Archdiocese of Perth extend their sincere condolences to the Durkin family and the parishioners of St Francis of Assisi, Maida Vale, whose parishioners he served so well, on the sad occasion of Fr Stephen's death.
A Vigil Mass for Fr Durkin will be celebrated on Monday 19 July 2010 commencing at 7pm at St Francis of Assisi, cnr Hawtin and Lillian Roads, Maida Vale.
A Solemn Pontifical Concelebrated Funeral Mass for the repose of the soul of Fr Durkin will be celebrated at St Mary's Cathedral on Tuesday 20 July 2010, commencing at 10am.
