The Centre for Faith Enrichment (CFE) will this month be taking a look at the 500 years since the beginning of the Protestant Reformation by hosting a daytime and evening course.

Entitled All in a Day’s Work: Martin Luther and the Reformation Road, the course will cover the history, spirituality, and theology of Martin Luther and the Catholic Church, including some very important recent developments in the call for unity.

The course will be run by Dominican Sister, frequent presenter at the CFE, and member of the Council of Churches of WA (CCWA), Dr Margaret Scharf OP.

Dr Scharf has been a member of CCWA for more than four years, a role which has seen her promoting ecumenical worship, facilitating formal and informal conversations between people or organisations of different church traditions and encouraging churches to work together for justice and peace.
Aside from covering some of the history of the Reformation, All in a Day’s Work: Martin Luther and the Reformation Road will focus on the two challenges posed to Christians by the Lutheran-Roman Catholic Commission on Unity. These are the purification and healing of memories, and the restoration of Christian unity in accordance with the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Commenting the upcoming course, CFE Director and Sessional Lecturer in Church history at Notre Dame University in Fremantle, Dr Marco Ceccarelli, stated that understanding the history of the Reformation is significantly important for anyone who calls themselves a Christian.

“The Reformation is a historical event from the 16th century which left its imprint on many areas of society throughout the centuries and launched a history of learning,” Dr Ceccarelli said.

“It is important that we take advantage of this 500 year anniversary to look back at its history, understand how it unfolded and reflect upon its impact on the Christian world. A focus on Second Vatican Council’s ‘call for unity’ is also needed,” he added.

“We could not have asked for a better presenter than Dr Margaret Scharf, who has is learned in this area and has been a member of the Council of Churches of WA for so long”
